Charles D. Brown was born on July 1, 1887 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, USA. He was an actor and director, known for The Big Sleep (1946), The Grapes of Wrath (1940) and Algiers (1938). He was married to Nellie V. Tallman (actress). He died on November 25, 1948 in Hollywood, California, USA.

Often typecast as officials, police inspectors, military officers and doctors.

Stage and screen character actor.

Appeared in many successful Broadway productions, often in roles requiring a dry, pungent humor.

Probably best remembered for playing Mr. Hatchways in the 1929 play "The Commodore Marries" starring Walter Huston.
