Biography

Jean-Stéphane Bron is a multi-awarded Swiss filmmaker and screenwriter, known for his political documentaries. He graduated from the École Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne (ECAL) in 1995 and has since built a career focused on exploring contemporary societal issues, including the crisis of democracy, economic upheaval, the rise of populism, and the power of techno-science.

Bron's early work includes Connu de nos services (1997), a documentary that investigates the scandal involving the Swiss federal police's surveillance of more than 600,000 citizens in the 1960s and 1970s. His 2003 film Mais im Bundeshuus / Le Génie helvétique delves into Swiss parliamentary debates over genetic engineering laws. Built like a political thriller the film was a huge success in theater in Switzerland.

His 2010 film Cleveland vs. Wall Street sheds light on the subprime mortgage crisis through a cinematic trial, premiering at the Cannes Film Festival (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs) and earning a César Award nomination in France. Bron's 2013 work, L'Expérience Blocher, offers a controversial portrait of billionaire and national-populist leader Christoph Blocher.

In 2017, his documentary L'Opéra de Paris captivated 200,000 viewers in theaters across 15 countries and won the Swiss Film Prize for Best Documentary for the third time. His 2021 film The Brain / 5 nouvelles du cerveau takes an immersive look at neuroscience and artificial intelligence, exploring the future of the human mind. His projects premiered 4 times on the piazza grande of the international festival of Locarno, in front of thousands of people.

Collaborating with director and screenwriter Alice Winocour, Bron contributed to the scripts for Maryland, Proxima, Paris Memories, Stitches, and the series The Deal (2025). Bron directed all six episodes of The Deal, produced by RTS, ARTE, and Gaumont.
