Biography

Raymond Briggs was born on January 18, 1934 in Wimbledon, London, England, UK. He was a writer and actor, known for The Snowman (1982), Ethel & Ernest (2016) and When the Wind Blows (1986). He was married to Jean Taprell Clark. He died on August 9, 2022 in Brighton, East Sussex, England, UK.

Author/illustrator of children's books.

His graphic novel, "When the Wind Blows" (later made into an animated feature), caused a sensation in England for its depiction of a nuclear attack.

He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2017 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to Literature. He was an illustrator, cartoonist and author in Westmeston, East Sussex, England.

He attended Wimbledon School of Art and Central School of Art. After doing national service, he studied painting at University College London. He worked in advertising and illustrated books as well as teaching illustration at Brighton College of Art.
