He was imprisoned in South Africa in 1975, accused of "terrorist acts against the state". In 1982 he was given the choice of leaving his native country, South Africa. He then settled in France. Breytenbach has written many books etc. that criticized the apartheid regime. Coming from a prominent Boer family, Breytenbach's brother became a high ranking officer in the South African army.
