Bremer was said to have a powerful ally and booster in M-G-M studio boss Louis B. Mayer, who remained convinced that, with "proper handling," Bremer would become one of the studio's biggest stars. Bremer had less faith in her own talents than did Mayer and, less than five years after her appearance in Meet Me in St. Louis, she retired from the screen in 1948.

Her last name was pronounced "Bray-mer", not "Brem-mer".

Upon her death, she was cremated and her ashes scattered off of Baja California.

She was a staunch Republican who gave much of her time and money towards various conservative political causes. She attended several Republican National Conventions, galas, and fund-raisers. She was active in the campaigns of Wendell Willkie, Thomas E. Dewey, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan.

Despite featured or starring roles in multiple big budget 1940s M-G-M musicals (two of which gave her Fred Astaire as a dance partner) Bremer never did "catch on" with movie audiences, and chose to retire from acting rather than renew her contract with the studio. She married into a wealthy family, had four children and died peacefully after several decades in self-imposed obscurity.
