Edward Bowes was born on June 14, 1874 in San Francisco, California, USA. He was a writer and actor, known for Major Bowes' Amateur Parade No. 1 (1936), Camille (1926) and Kindling (1915). He was married to Margaret Illington. He died on June 14, 1946 in Rumson, New Jersey, USA.

Host of CBS Radio's "Major Bowes' Original Amateur Hour" (1934-1946).

He has a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Radio at 1513 Vine Street in Hollywood, California.

Member of the Board of Directors of Goldwyn Pictures Corp. in 1922.

The amateur can be invited to the microphone on the underlying theory of finding new talent. This sort of show must be a sincere effort to help those who have faith in themselves. Everything doesn't have to be funny on an amateur hour. Neither can the show be prepared in advance, for if it is the amateur becomes frozen. It must be a pot-luck broadcast with spontaneity the keynote. What the neophyte does at the microphone unconsciously and naturally is what counts.
