Having read history at Oxford, he wanted to do something on current affairs. On leaving on the advice of BBC's Hue Weldon, he joined ITN at the birth of ITV. He spent his first two years behind the scenes before starting news casting. He said, that he was very bad for about a year before he got the hang of things. He read books on politics and current affairs to keep on top of things .He moved away from news casting and just did one day a week and his own nightly show, Dateline. He had two homes, a Chelsea flat and a house in Sussex, and went abroad for about three months of the year.
