Biography

Jerry Bock was born on November 23, 1928 in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. He was a composer and writer, known for Fiddler on the Roof (1971), Election (1999) and Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009). He was married to Patricia Faggen. He died on November 3, 2010 in Mount Kisco, New York, USA.

Won four Tony Awards: two in 1960 for "Fiorello!," as Best Composer, in a tie with Richard Rodgers for "The Sound of Music," and for his music as part of a Best Musical win; and two in 1965 for "Fiddler on the Roof," as Best Composer and Lyricist, shared with collaborator Sheldon Harnick and for his music as part of a Best Musical win. He was also Tony-nominated on four other occasions: one in 1964, for his music as part of a Best Musical nomination for "She Loves Me;" two in 1967, as Best Composer and Lyricist, again in collaboration with Harnick, and for his music and book collaboration on "The Apple Tree;" and one in 1971, as Best Score (Musical) for "The Rothschilds."

Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972.

Won the 1960 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the musical "Fiorello!" collaborating with George Abbott, Jerome Weidman, and Sheldon Harnick.

Studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he wrote the musical "Big As Life".

Made his debut on Broadway in 1955 and subsequently formed a fruitful partnership with lyricist Sheldon Harnick.
