- Died suddenly just four days after he finished supervising the final cut of the Laurel & Hardy feature Block-Heads (1938). The film was released two weeks after his death.
- His main contribution, when working with Laurel & Hardy, was insisting on sticking more closely to the script than other directors and rehearsing comedy gags so that they came off the way that they were planned.
