- He was awarded the O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 2003 New Year's Honours List for his services to drama.

He has also been Tony-nominated five other times: as Best Director (Dramatic), in 1968 for "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg;" as Best Director (Play), in 1984 for "Noises Off;" and in 1990 for "Lettice and Lovage;" and as Best Director (Musical), in 1990 for "City of Angels;" and in 1997 for "The Life." He is the only directed to have been twice nominated in both directing caregories in the same year (1990 and 2000).
