- Shirlene A. Blake is the Dance Director for the New York City Department of Education Office of Arts & Special Projects. Blake earned a BFA in Dance from Southern Methodist University, an Ed.M. in Dance Education from Temple University, and a Post-Graduate Advanced Certificate in Supervision and Administration from Hunter College. She is pursuing her Doctorate in Teacher Education within the Dance Education Program at Columbia Teachers College.

- As a student, I learned that technique was not enough. Passion, determination, and perseverance were key to success. I also had a place where all the students around me were hungry for the same thing. As a teacher at Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), I appreciated that collaboration within and across departments were essential to train well-rounded artist.
