Political cartoonist and illustrator who achieved brief national fame during the first season of the famous satire show "That Was The Week That Was" on BBC-TV in 1962-3. Transmitted live each Saturday night, the show had a regular slot in which Birdsall would create a satirical cartoon on the spot from nothing. He became immensely popular, and the public was shocked when he died of leukemia during the show's summer break.
