Biography

Sachin Bhowmick was a prominent Indian screenwriter and director known for his significant contribution to Hindi cinema. He is best remembered for his work on popular films including Anuradha 1960, Brahmachari 1968, Aradhana 1969, Caravan 1971, Khel Khel Mein 1975, Hum Kisise Kum Naheen 1977, Gol Maal 1979, Karz 1980, Karma 1986, Karan Arjun 1995, Taal 1999, Koi Mil Gaya 2003 and Krrish 2006. During a career spanning several decades, he established himself as one of the prolific screenwriters of Indian cinema.

Sachin Bhowmick was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. He studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata and graduated in 1952. His education in the arts contributed to his creative approach towards storytelling and screenwriting.

Bhowmick began his career as a screenwriter in the 1950s. He became known for his versatility and worked across romance, comedy, drama and action. Over the course of his career, he contributed stories and screenplays to more than 90 films.

One of the major highlights of his career was Aradhana 1969. Directed by Shakti Samanta and starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, the film became a major success and played an important role in establishing Rajesh Khanna as a leading Hindi film star. Bhowmick also contributed to several successful films during the 1970s and 1980s including Caravan, Khel Khel Mein, Hum Kisise Kum Naheen, Gol Maal, Karz and Karma.

Bhowmick made his directorial debut with Raja Rani 1973, starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. It remained his only directorial venture.During the 1990s and 2000s, Bhowmick continued his association with successful Hindi films. . His writing contributed to several commercially successful films across different generations of Hindi cinema.

Bhowmick received the Filmfare Best Story Award in 1968 for Brahmachari. He was also nominated for the Filmfare Best Story Award for Aradhana in 1969 and Pehchan in 1970.

Throughout his career, Bhowmick worked with several prominent producers and directors. He had professional associations with J. Om Prakash, Subhash Ghai, Rakesh Roshan, Nasir Hussain, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Pramod Chakravorty, collaborating with them on multiple film projects.

Apart from his film work, Bhowmick was associated with the Bengali cinema magazine Ultorath, where he contributed articles and shared his knowledge and views on cinema.

Bhowmick was married to actress Kalpana, and they later divorced. He subsequently married Bansari Bhowmick in 1971, and they had a son. Sachin Bhowmick died on April 12, 2011, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He left behind a notable body of work and is remembered for his contribution to Hindi cinema as a screenwriter and director.

He had written a film called Biwi Aur Makan (1966) for famous filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The heroine was Kalpana Mohan, who became Bhowmick's first wife. The marriage quickly ended in divorce.
