Rolf has suffered from Crohn's disease most of his life, and has an ileostomy.

The former NFL kicker was an All-Pro with the San Diego Chargers in the early 1980s. On January 2, 1982, the AFC division playoffs against the Miami Dolphins went into overtime. Rolf produced a 29-yard field goal at 13:52, winning the game.

During his brief stint as host of Wheel of Fortune (1975), one show ended with two players in a tie. Rolf looked directly into the camera and said, "I have no idea what to do here.".

Wrote a book, 'Alive And Kicking', about his career and his fight with his illness.

He led the NFL in 1981 and 1982 for Extra Points Made (55 and 32) and Extra Point Attempts (61 and 34).

Merv Griffin chose Benirschke to host Wheel of Fortune (1975), replacing Pat Sajak who left the NBC daytime show to host The Pat Sajak Show (1989) on CBS, though Sajak stayed on the nighttime syndicated Wheel of Fortune (1983). Benirschke hosted the daytime show from January 10th, 1989 to June 30th, 1989, when NBC canceled it. CBS picked up the daytime show a few weeks later, and replaced Benirschke with Bob Goen.
