Began writing screenplays during his time on General Hospital (1963).

Prior to acting and screenwriting, he worked as a stock broker.

As he played a regular role during Dynasty's final year, he was offered a lead on Aaron Spelling's next show Beverly Hills 90210, by Aaron himself, Kevin asked if Aaron would produce his screenplay instead. He never heard from Aaron Spelling again.

While under contract with General Hospital Bernhardt felt it prudent to improve as an actor, in case the screenwriting didn't pan out. He auditioned for Stella Adler herself to join her master class. At being asked how he felt himself capable of skipping 2 years of intro classes with her former students in the workshop, Bernhardt explained he had grown up in a trailer in the Appalachia Mountains, and was shooting his family's venison at the age of 11. At the time those deer outweighed him. So how hard could this be? Stella admitted him to her master class.
