- Being Jewish in Occupied France he was at risk of arrest, but quipped that people with a biographic entry in the Petit Larousse did not get arrested. However, in 1943 he was taken to the Drancy internment camp in Paris and was only able to escape deportation to a concentration camp through the personal intervention of Sacha Guitry and Arletty. However, he lost a grandson at Mathausen.
