Biography

Tristan Bernard was born on September 7, 1866 in Besançon, Doubs, France. He was a writer and actor, known for Runaway Ladies (1938), Le petit café (1931) and Playboy of Paris (1930). He was married to Suzanne Rebecca Bomsel and Agathe Marcelle "Mamita" Reiss. He died on December 7, 1947 in Paris, France.

Father of Raymond Bernard and Jean-Jacques Bernard.

Greatuncle of Francis Veber.

Uncle of Serge Veber.

Was a noted Crossword enthusiast, and famous for his dry witticisms.

Being Jewish in Occupied France he was at risk of arrest, but quipped that people with a biographic entry in the Petit Larousse did not get arrested. However, in 1943 he was taken to the Drancy internment camp in Paris and was only able to escape deportation to a concentration camp through the personal intervention of Sacha Guitry and Arletty. However, he lost a grandson at Mathausen.
