Streaming Stars, Then and Now

Academy Award-nominated, eight-time Emmy nominated, and two-time Emmy winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger, a recipient of Peabody, DGA, and Sundance awards, has been a pioneering force in nonfiction filmmaking for more than three decades.

Berlinger is the creator of such landmark documentaries as Sundance winner BROTHER'S KEEPER, which influenced a generation of documentarians and the multiple Emmy-winning and Academy Award-nominated PARADISE LOST Trilogy, which helped lead to the release of the wrongfully convicted West Memphis Three. In October 2025, The New York Times called Paradise Lost "perhaps the most chilling of all true-crime documentaries." Berlinger's METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER, which redefined the "rockumentary" genre and is widely considered by critics as one of the greatest rock 'n' roll films of all time, and CRUDE, which examined oil pollution in the ancestral homeland of thousands of Ecuadorians in the Amazon Rainforest, won 22 human rights, environmental and film festival awards and triggered a high profile First Amendment battle with the Chevron Corporation. Eight of Berlinger's films, including his Emmy-nominated 2012 Paul Simon documentary, UNDER AFRICAN SKIES, have premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, with three earning Grand Jury Prize nominations. He has also received multiple awards from the Directors Guild of America, the National Board of Review, the Independent Spirit Awards, and the Critics' Choice Awards. In addition to his eight personal Emmy nominations and two Emmy wins, his films and shows have garnered sixteen additional Emmy nominations in other craft categories for his collaborators.

Berlinger is described as a "true crime hit factory" for Netflix, whose work has "redefined crime documentaries as a vehicle for social justice", according to a Bloomberg profile. "He's the gold standard in true crime. The moral compass that he has, the sense of responsibility he has for victims and for getting the story right and shining a light on it, that is something that is very unique", said VP for original documentary series at Netflix, Adam Del Deo.

This responsibility is underscored by Berlinger's disciplined journalistic prowess, as noted by A.O. Scott of The New York Times who calls Berlinger a "tenacious investigator with a nose for the abuse of power" in reference to his 2014 documentary about the trials of notorious criminal James "Whitey" Bulger, WHITEY: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA V. JAMES J. BULGER.

Berlinger's work has often catalyzed real-world change, some directly inspiring justice reform efforts and recognition on state and national levels. After working with Berlinger on his documentary series about the wrongfully convicted Richard Glossip, death penalty abolitionist Sister Helen Prejean (Dead Man Walking) commented: "There is no other documentarian who has consistently been more focused and more effective in using film to pursue the plight of the wrongfully convicted. His work has helped get six people out of prison and has advanced the causes of many other pending cases, including Glossip's."

After Berlinger's feature documentary, INTENT TO DESTROY, was screened for US lawmakers, playing a critical role in the United States Congress finally acknowledging the Armenian Genocide in 2019 after a century of Turkish denial, Aram Hamparian, executive director of the Armenian National Committee of America commented, "Joe Berlinger's INTENT TO DESTROY empowered our community, our coalition partners and our congressional allies to finally persuade both chambers of Congress to formally recognize the massacre of the Armenian people in 1915 as a genocide."

Berlinger holds a streak of chart-topping work on Netflix, attracting enormous audiences with 19 Netflix productions. Since Netflix introduced its top ten rankings, all of Berlinger’s films and series have debuted in the Netflix Top 10, often at #1. Berlinger is also the first filmmaker to simultaneously cover the same subject in scripted and unscripted forms with CONVERSATIONS WITH A KILLER: THE TED BUNDY TAPES and EXTREMELY WICKED, SHOCKINGLY EVIL, AND VILE, the latter of which starred Zac Efron, Lily Collins, and John Malkovich and sold to Netflix in a Sundance bidding war for almost $10 million.

Berlinger’s JEFFREY EPSTEIN: FILTHY RICH debuted as the number #1 series on the platform in 2020. The feature-length sequel to the series, GHISLAINE: MAXWELL: FILTHY RICH, was also the #1 documentary on the platform after its debut.

In more recent years, Berlinger’s MADOFF: THE MONSTER OF WALL STREET debuted as the #1 documentary series on the platform. HITLER AND THE NAZIS: EVIL ON TRIAL debuted as the Top 6 most-watched series globally, and was the only documentary on the list at the time. The series ignited a global conversation about the current threats to democracy in the United States and abroad and earned a News & Documentary Emmy.

Berlinger's COLD CASE: WHO KILLED JONBENÉT RAMSEY debuted as the #1 television series on Netflix across all narrative and documentary titles and remained in this top position for two weeks. The three-part docuseries brought new attention to the notorious 1996 murder of six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey by examining both law enforcement and the media's mishandling of the case and unjust treatment of the Ramsey family. The story's resurgence in the public eye has led the Boulder Police Department to renew their commitment to solving this decades-old mystery. The series’ second season, COLD CASE: THE TYLENOL MURDERS, also debuted as the #1 series in less than 24 hours and earned a News & Documentary Emmy. CONVERSATIONS WITH A KILLER: THE SON OF SAM TAPES also debuted in the Top Ten and identified a new victim associated with the decades-old case.

Berlinger’s THE IDAHO MURDERS: COLLEGE NIGHTMARE debuted as the #1 TV series within 24 hours after its release and was the #1 show on the platform for over a week. The series garnered over 18.2 million views in its first week, and surpassed 1 billion streaming minutes. Berlinger’s fifth and final installment of one of Netflix’s longest-running true crime documentary series, CONVERSATIONS WITH A KILLER: THE CHARLES MANSON TAPES, debuted as the #2 series and #1 documentary on the platform.
