Trivia

  • Retired from acting in 2007 after being diagnosed with a congenital heart defect (amidst rumours of being 'difficult' due to a prodigious alcohol intake).
  • Appeared three times in films with Hayley Mills. The first was his breakthrough role in The Family Way (1966); the second was Twisted Nerve (1968) and the third was Endless Night (1972).
  • His London stage debut and acting debut was as Ophelia in "Hamlet" at the opening of the Queen's Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue. The production was staged by the Youth Theatre. It was traditional for men to play female roles in Shakespeare's time, and at 15, Bennett's voice hadn't broken yet. In later years he played the title Dane himself in a South African production.
  • Before being cast in the lengthy cameo role of Tom in Pennies from Heaven (1978), Bennett was on the shortlist for the male lead Arthur Parker (source: Radio Times letter).
  • He joined the National Youth Theatre where he stayed for five years, playing many leading Shakespearian roles.
