Biography

In honor of what would have been her 92nd birthday on March 7, 2024, she was honored with a Google Doodle.

She began her movie career appearing in special guest roles (singing a song or two and saying a few lines) and eventually reached star status playing the female lead in Camino de Guanajuato (1955). For the rest of her career, she either starred in musicals or sang a song in a movie.

Sang the song "María la Bandida" (written by José Alfredo Jiménez) for María Félix in La bandida (1962) and the two became good friends.

She appeared on-screen with several of her rivals, including Mexican folk singers Rosita Quintana and Amalia Mendoza in ¿Dónde estás, corazón? (1961), Lucha Villa in México de mi corazón' (Dos Mexicanas en México) (1964), and Flor Silvestre in El revólver sangriento (1964). In those movies, she shared musical numbers with all of them except Silvestre, because the two were part of an ensemble cast of famous singers and actors and, although they appeared in one scene together, their characters did not converse with one another.

[1956] I don't think it's necessary to study dramatic art. The public loves me that way, and I will continue that way as long as the public accepts me.
