Steve Belsky

Biography

Steve Belsky

Mini bio

  • Steve Belsky was born in Scarsdale, NY, but raised in Houston, Texas. He attended various Texas colleges in the 1980s until distracted by work in lighting and camera as productions began shooting more frequently in Texas.

Steve joined the I.A.T.S.E. in 1992, when the New Texas Studio Mechanics Local was formed, and was elected to its first executive board as business manager for the state's Central Region. In 1996, he was elected president and continues in that capacity to this day. Steve is also a camera operator in Local 600 and was a Chief Lighting Technician in Local 728 (honorably withdrawn).

Steve returned to school for bachelor's degrees in Government and Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Texas and a J.D. at South Texas College of Law. He worked as a maritime attorney until 2013 when he became an International Representative in the IATSE's Sports Broadcast Dept. focusing largely on contracts and employer relations. Still true to his motion picture origins, Steve coordinates the film incentive lobbying effort on behalf of the now expanded Texas and Oklahoma Studio Mechanics as president and legislative liaison.

In 2015, Steve was elected as District 6 Secretary (a job about which he's been heard to say the best parts are certainly the PAC functions). And in 2019, when Broadcast Department Director Sandra England retired, he accepted the shared directorship of the Broadcast Department with his friend Fran O'hern.

He retains his law license, though related activities are now mostly just drafting wills for friends and answering increasingly crazy legal questions from his Dad. Outside of work, Steve is an avid motorsports enthusiast, machinist, and fabricator with an interest in all things mechanical.
