Mini bio

  • Kathryn Beaumont was just ten years old when she was chosen for the voice of Alice, in Disney's animated version of the classic children's tale, Alice in Wonderland (1951). Walt Disney was so impressed with Kathryn's long curly blonde hair, sparkling eyes and acting ability, that he chose her as the model for Alice.
    - IMDb mini biography by: Anonymous
  • A native of Manchester, England, Kathryn Beaumont moved to Bangor, North Wales, where her father, Kenneth Beaumont, a singer, was a broadcaster during World War II. Upon her return to London in 1945, Kathryn was spotted by an MGM scout and came to the U.S. under contract. She was only around ten when she was signed and began recording the voice of "Alice" in Alice in Wonderland (1951) for Disney (replacing Margaret O'Brien: according to one newspaper account, the child star to whom she played second fiddle at MGM). Kathryn also portrayed Alice on film, but only for the benefit of the Disney animators, as a live-action reference for their work.

After the release of Peter Pan (1953), Kathryn resumed regular schooling and enrolled at the University of Southern California, where she earned a degree and teaching credentials. She continued to work for Disney each summer during college. On the completion of her studies, and for the next 30 years, Kathryn devoted her time and energy to being a teacher in a local elementary school, a move she has never regretted. She explains simply, "Teaching gave me satisfaction, and I stayed". Kathryn was named a "Disney Legend" by the Walt Disney Company in 1998.

  • Was honored as a Disney Legend in 1998.
  • As of 1996, she was a school teacher, with students still asking about Beaumont's "Disney voices".
  • Permanently retired from her previous role as Wendy Darling and Alice in 2005. Hynden Walch has replaced her as the new voice of Alice.
  • Reprised her voice role as Alice in the 'Alice in Wonderland' Disney theme park ride (decades after she first recorded it for the film).
  • Stated in an interview that she recorded dialogue for her famed voice role as Wendy Darling (though as adult) for Return to Never Land (2002). However, for unexplained reasons, voice actress Kath Soucie's recordings ended up being used for the film instead.

Quotes

  • [on how it feels to be part of animated Disney films]: Wonderful to have that opportunity at such a young age, to participate in Walt Disney films, to be part of that. I had grown up as a small child, knowing Walt Disney's movies having seen them, admiring everything about him, [so] I was in total awe when I first came here and got the part for Alice
