U.S. Congressional Representative from Kentucky (1913-1927).

A loyal Democrat, he was majority leader in the Senate from 1937 to 1946.

After being admitted (1901) to the bar, he served as prosecuting attorney (1905-9) and judge (1909-1913) for McCracken County, Kentucky.

He became Vice President under Harry S. Truman in 1949. In 1954, Kentucky returned him to the Senate.

Father-in-law of Douglas MacArthur II.

Was the first Vice President to sit on the National Security Council.

Is one of five Vice Presidents to be elected to the U.S. Senate after serving as Vice President. The other four were John C. Calhoun, John C. Breckinridge, Hannibal Hamlin and Hubert Humphrey.

Being 75 years of age at the time he left office, he is the oldest U.S. Vice-President to date.
