- He was made Soloist with American Ballet Theatre in 1979 and Principal Dancer in 1984. In 1994, he became Assistant to the Artistic Staff.
- When his wife Julie Kent was appointed to Artistic Director of the Washington Ballet, she made him Associate Artistic Director.
- He began his ballet training at the North Carolina School of the Arts and the School of American Ballet, and also studied at the Leningrad-Kirov Ballet School in Leningrad.
