- [1983-2005] Labour MP for West Ham.
- Took the title Lord Stratford when he was made a working peer in the House of Lords in summer 2005 after retiring as a member of Parliament.
- Had a brain hemorrhage while on vacation/holiday on Sanibel Island, Florida, USA. He was rushed to a hospital in neighbouring Fort Myers where he died.
- A passionate and outspoken vegetarian, he was dedicated to the anti-hunting lobby and served as vice-president of the League Against Cruel Sports.
- Was involved in a near-fatal motorcycle accident in his youth.
