Born Lucy Nott Carmalt in Hawaii, daughter of a wealthy labor relations expert. She attended high school in Los Angeles and spent time at her father's Nevada ranch. She also was schooled in New York and at the Art Institute of San Francisco. She changed her name to Sierra Bandit after a camp counselor impressed her with tales of the infamous 19th-century Mexican bandit Joaquin Murrieta.
