Biography

William Ball was born on April 29, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He was a director and actor, known for Suburban Commando (1991), Great Performances (1971) and The Defenders (1961). He died on July 30, 1991 in Los Angeles County, California, USA.

Was nominated for Broadway's 1965 Tony Award as Best Director (Dramatic) for "Tartuffe."

He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Acting and Design in 1953 from the Carnegie Institute (Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He spent a year on the Fulbright Scholarship in England where he studied English Repertory Theatre. He returned and earned his Masters of Arts degree in Directing at the Carnegie Institute (Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Allen Fletcher was a teacher and later a director of the conservatory at the American Conservatory Theatre.

In 1965, he founded the American Conservatory Theater (ACT) and was their artistic director until 1986.

He studied at Iona Preparatory School in New York State and spent two years at Fordham University in The Bronx, New York. He transferred to the Carnegie Institute of Technology (later Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
