Biography

Mr. Baitz was born in 1961 in Los Angeles, and grew up there, in Brazil and South Africa. Plays include: "Other Desert Cities", "The Substance of Fire", "A Fair Country", and "Ten Unknowns", (All produced at Lincoln Center), The Paris Letter", "The Film Society", "Mizlansky/Zilinsky" and "Three Hotels", as well as a new version of Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. He is the recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation Award, a Drama Desk Award, is a Guggenheim Fellow, and a Pulitzer Prize finalist for "A Fair Country." He won a Humanitas Award for the PBS-TV's "American Playhouse" version of "Three Hotels" which he also directed.

Baitz was the longtime romantic partner of director ("Wicked") and actor ("Angels in America") Joe Mantello. They were together from 1990 to 2002.

Finalist for the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the play "A Fair Country" and finalist for the 2012 play Other Desert Cities.

His play, "The Substance of Fire" at the Mark Taper Forum Theatre in Los Angeles, California was awarded the 1993 Drama Logue for Outstanding Production.

He was awarded the 1986 Drama Logue Award for Outstanding Direction and Adaptation for "In Dreams Begin Responsibilities," in a Sundays at the Itchey Foot production at the Mark Taper Forum Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

He was awarded the 2005 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Ted Schmitt Award for outstanding new play, "The Paris Letter, "at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
