In 1999, she had colon cancer surgery, underwent radiation and chemotherapy, and never missed a day on the bench.

Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993, she became the second woman to be named to a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court, joining Sandra Day O'Connor. (Confirmed by the U.S. Senate, 3 August 1993; began serving, 10 August 1993.).

Underwent surgery on February 5, 2009 for pancreatic cancer.

Lives in Washington, D.C., and is an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

Daughter of Celia (Amster) and Nathan Bader, a merchant. Her father was a Russian Jewish emigrant, born in Podolsk. Her mother was born in New York, to Polish Jewish parents.

Frankly, I had thought at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don't want to have too many of.
