He was born in Troy, New York, the son of Sarah (Fabian) and Colin Brian Baddiel, a research chemist. His parents were from the UK, and were living in the U.S. at the time. They returned to England, where he grew up, when he was four months old. His father was from Swansea, Wales, and was of Russian Jewish and Polish Jewish descent. David's mother was born in Nazi Germany, also to a Jewish family, and left for England as an infant.
