Bacon was found unresponsive in the early morning hours of Monday, November 2, 1953, on board a Los Angeles bus. Ironically, he had recently finished work on Tanganyika (1954) in which he had a death scene.
Son Shelby Bacon was sixteen at the time of Joe's death from heart failure. Shelby's mother was Clorine Saunders.
