Biography

Winifred Atwell was born on February 27, 1910 in Tunapuna, Trinidad. She is known for Sunstruck (1972), Pot Black (1969) and The Hagenbeck Story (1971). She was married to Lew Levisohn. She died on February 27, 1983 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Her version of George Botsford's "Black And White Rag", played on a honky-tonk piano, was used as the title music for the UK snooker programme "Pot Black".

She was the first black musician to have a number one hit song in the UK.
