Biography

Georg Asagaroff was a Russian-born actor and film director who began his career in the Russian silent cinema before moving into directing. Following the Russian Revolution, he settled in Germany, where he continued his career during the silent and early sound eras. His German work included Eva and the Grasshopper (1927) and Der tolle Bomberg (1932). His film career ended after the Nazis came to power and he was prohibited from working in the German film industry. His son, Grischa Asagaroff, later became a prominent opera director.

Georg Asagaroff also shot some movies in the sound film era of the 30s.

When the National Socialists seized the power Georg Asagaroff was banned from working and his film career came to an end.

With the outbreak of the October revolution his film career came to an end in Russia. He went to Germany where he was able to continue his film career in the 20s.

His son Grischa Asagaroff became a well-known opera director.

He made first experiences as an actor at the theater before he made his film debut in 1915. He was also able to gain a foothold as a movie director and his first movie he realised was "Grekh" (1916). It followed the Russian silent movie "Kulisy ekrana" (1917).
