The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising became a symbol of Jewish resistance and heroism during the Holocaust. Mordechai Anielewicz and the Jewish Combat Organization (ZOB) gained world celebrity as heroes. Among the fighters of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was another group that was not granted commemoration in the collective memory. They were the members of the Jewish Military Union (ZZW), a group of fighters of the Beitar youth movement. This group, which was better armed than other groups fighting in the rest of the Ghetto, was responsible for the major and the stubbornest battles of the Uprising. The Germans failed to remove for 4 days the blue and white flag the fighters had hoisted into the Ghetto sky. However, the story of Beitar fighters disappeared from history books and their place in the myth of Jewish heroism during the Holocaust was omitted. How did it happen? Were political and ideological reasons behind the disappearance of the ZZW from the history?
