John Archer is best known as the producer of The Story of Film: An Odyssey, written and directed by Mark Cousins. They have made many films together. John runs Hopscotch Films, specialists in feature documentaries and drama from Scotland. This year The Story of Documentary Film premiered in Sundance and Berlin. Last year Lost for Words and The Golden Spurtle premiered at CPH:DOX . Ben Rivers’ Bogancloch premiered at Locarno Film Festival in International Competition, Janey closed Glasgow Film Festival with a successful cinema run and Life and Other Problems opened CPH:DOX two days later. In 2023 Bill Douglas My Best Friend directed by Jack Archer, premiered in Venice; Loch Ness: They Created a Monster (John MacLaverty) screened as part of Cannes Docs before its premiere in Sitges ; and Tish, directed by Paul Sng, opened the Sheffield Documentary Festival. Other recent premieres include Jono MacLeod’s My Old School (Sundance ’22) and from director Mark Cousins, My Name is Alfred Hitchcock (Telluride ‘22) was 33 in The Guardian’s 2023 films of the year; The Story of Film a New Generation had a special screening at the start of Cannes ’21 and Women Make Film ( Venice, TIFF, ) was awarded the inaugural Innovation in Storytelling Award from European Film Academy.
