Biography

Edwards' journey in theater began with her Broadway debut in Doctor Jazz (1975), where she played Georgia's Girl and Singer, while also serving as the understudy for Georgia Sheridan.

Edwards, who performed both as Annie Joe Edwards and Annie Joe, was in the Broadway production of "Legends!" with Carol Channing, as well as productions of "The Wiz" and "Ain't Misbehavin'." Those last two shows also took her to London's West End.

Throughout her career, Annie Joe Edwards shared the stage and screen with legendary figures such as Carol Channing, Ruby Dee, and Diahann Carroll.

In addition to her theater career, she appeared on TV in series such as "In the Heat of the Night" and "Mama Flora's Family.

She remained deeply connected to Birmingham and to Encore Theatre and Gallery, where she delivered her final stage performances as the radio announcer in Steel Magnolias in 2022 and 12 Angry Jurors in 2023. That moment was a testament to her unwavering love for the craft and her commitment to fostering local theater. She didn't just perform-she nurtured, she inspired, and she gave back.
