Angeles was an accomplished debater. His high school debate team won first place in New York State in 1966.

In 1968, at age 17, Angeles' selection as the American Legion National Oratorical Champion led to his being the youngest person to address the National Republican Convention (August 5, 1968). He was introduced by Republican Representative Daniel E. Button (1917-2009). Angeles and Button both died in 2009.

Angeles passed away suddenly following a brief hospitalization at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center on May 2, 2009.

Angeles was a practicing attorney, a member of both the New York and California Bars. He clerked for The Honorable William Hughes Mulligan (1918-1996) of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and U.S. District Court Judge James Foley in the Northern District of New York. He practiced law with Donavan, Leisure, Newton & Irvine in New York City and Whiteman Osterman & Hanna LLP in Albany, New York before moving to California in 1982.

Angeles was a Root Tilden Scholar at New York University School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1975.

Angeles taught as an adjunct professor at the Pepperdine Law School in Malibu, California.

Angeles was a resident of Santa Monica, California.

Angeles had two sisters, Rosemary Maye and Margaret Cangilos-Ruiz.

Angeles was born John Joseph Cangilos to Mr. and Mrs. Peter R Cangilos (September 16, 1914-May 26, 1998).

Angeles attended high school at the Vincentian Institute in Albany, New York.

Angeles was the valedictorian of Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA in 1972.
