  • Yuri Andropov was a Soviet politician and diplomat, active primarily from the 1950s until the mid-1980s. His father Vladimir Konstantinovich Andropov was a railway worker of Don Cossack descent . Andropov's mother Yevgenia Karlovna Fleckenstein was a school teacher. Yevgenia was a foundling child of unknown origin, but she was adopted by the Jewish watchmaker Karl Franzevich Fleckenstein.
