A relative newcomer to television at a time when most people would be looking toward retirement, Florenz Ames started out as a song and dance man in vaudeville, often performing on smaller stages with his wife Alice "Adelaide" Winthrop; as "Ames and Winthrop" they appeared in a revue called "Alice in Blunderland" with Winthrop in the title role and Ames playing the other roles. He moved onto the Broadway stage and appeared in a number of shows from before World War I until the Korean War, including the original productions of "Of Thee I Sing" and "Oklahoma!" as well as a number of Gilbert & Sullivan operas.

Florenz Ames began his acting career very late.

With the support of his older brother Winthrop Ames , the most prominent theatrical and music hall producer in New York at the time, he began his performing life as a singer and dancer in vaudeville, often performing small parts with his wife Alice "Adelaide" Winthrop.

From 1950 to 1956, he played the role of Inspector Richard Queen in the first television version of the detective mysteries of the famous Ellery Queen, sharing the title role with Lee Bowman.

He was seen alongside the biggest names in Hollywood cinema of the 1950s: Grace Kelly, Robert Mitchum, Barry Sullivan, Marlon Brando, Anthony Quinn, Glenn Ford, Greer Garson, Doris Day ...
