Biography

Is the fourth of six children. His father Jack was a salesman and his mother Helen was a homemaker.

With friend Jeanie Cunningham, recorded songs and comedy sketches for astronaut Bonnie Dunbar who took them on four Space Shuttle missions and shared them with the other astronauts. Altman and Cunningham customized the material using the astronauts' biographies and made fake commercials "selling" the specific items they were using in their experiments.

His oldest brother, John D. Altenburg Jr., is a retired Major General for the U.S. Army.

Cared for his mother, Helen, for five years from the onset of her dementia until her death. During that time they appeared together in a national commercial promoting Alzheimer's research.
