Biography

He graduated from the Technical High School of Architecture in 1952. He was admitted at the Theatre and Cinema Art Institute in 1952, in the class of Professor Aura Buzescu, and graduated in 1956. He got his PhD in Radio Theatre with a thesis on the 'Convertibility of acting expression means in the process of creation', and later taught acting art at the same Institute, from 1985 to 2005.

Pictured on one of a set of 12 Romanian commemorative postage stamps issued 1 March 2014, celebrating Romanian actors and actresses.

He played in hundreds of plays on the stages of the Bucharest Municipal Theater, the Comedy Theater, and the National Theater in Bucharest. His career also included 70 films, many of them directed by director Sergiu Nicolaescu, and 300 roles in radio theater.

One of the greatest Romanian actors, as well as a university professor, journalist, essayist and poet.

Honorary member of the National Theatre I.L. Caragiale of Bucharest, member of the Senate of UNITER actors' union, of the Union of Professional Journalists of Romania, and of the Romanian Filmmakers Association UCIN.
