Antonio Aguilar

Overview

Born in Villanueva, Zacatecas, to Jesús Aguilar y Aguilar and Ángela Márquez Barraza Valle, Antonio Aguilar is one of the most iconic actor-singers of Mexican cinema. He began his singing career in the 1940's and then debuted in national Mexican cinema in 1952, during its Golden era. Later in his acting career, Aguilar was noted for his brilliant portrayals of revolutionary and folk-song heroes in historical films. He won the "Premio ACE" Award for Best Actor for his performance in Zapata (1970). Aguilar married frequent co-star Flor Silvestre in 1959.

Father of two sons with Flor Silvestre: Antonio Aguilar hijo and Pepe Aguilar.
Had six siblings: Jose Roque Barraza, Salvador Barraza, Guadalupe Barraza, Luis Tomas Barraza, Mariano Barraza and Josefina Barraza.
He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 7060 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California on September 7, 2000.
Has the distinction of portraying both revolutionary leaders Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata in Mexican cinema.
His first film co-starring his second wife, Flor Silvestre, was La huella del chacal (1956). This was an installment in the Western film series "Mauricio Rosales 'El Rayo'". Both also co-starred in the series' last official installment, Los muertos no hablan (1958), and a subsequent revival, Sabor a sangre (1980).

From the seminary, I went to live with an uncle. He decided we needed an airplane pilot in the family business. I came to the United States to study aviation, and later went to Mount Union college. I got a scholarship to study singing under Deanna Durbin's former coach in Hollywood. My uncle wired that I was fired from the family business because it had no room for clowns.
[1969] I have been in 103 Mexican movies. Hollywood came after me. I dictated my terms because I had confidence.
