Biography

Virginia Saenz McCarthy was born in San Bernardino, California and lived for most of her childhood in nearby Rialto, California. A graduate of Eisenhower High School in Rialto, Virginia earned her BA and Masters degree in Theology from St. Mary's College of California (Moraga, CA). For 7 years after completing her undergraduate degree, she taught religious studies at a Catholic high school in the San Francisco Bay Area then transitioned to a career in film, television and commercial production. After 30 years as a script supervisor, Virginia has 32 feature films to her credit and has worked with several accomplished filmmakers, including: Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station), Woody Allen (Blue Jasmine; Irrational Man), Spike Lee (Livin' Da Dream), Todd Field (Little Children; In the Bedroom), Curtis Hanson and Michael Apted (Chasing Mavericks), and Philip Kaufman (Hemingway & Gellhorn). In addition, Virginia worked as the main unit script supervisor on all three seasons of HBO's series Looking and the first full season of 13 Reasons Why.

Virginia wrote, produced and directed her first short film Altar+Cation: The Musical! which had its world premiere at the Alameda International Film Festival in February 2022. The film won the festival's Audience Award for the audience's favorite film and Virginia received the Best Newcomer Award for her directorial debut.

In 2010, Virginia produced the independent feature film: Love, Concord - overseeing the project from script development and preproduction through production, post, and distribution.

For 25 years, Virginia has taught a January Term film analysis course at St. Mary's College of California with an emphasis on independent films by, about and representing persons traditionally marginalized in, misrepresented in and missing from mainstream film productions. The course culminates with the class traveling to Park City to attend the Sundance Film Festival. Several of her students have gone on to work in the film industry and have achieved significant success as actors, writers, producers and directors. While Virginia takes no credit for their hard earned success and achievements, she is tremendously proud of and inspired by each and every one of the men and women she has had the privilege of having in her classes over the years.
