    He studied music at the Conservatoire de Paris in the same harmony class as Henri Betti and then they both composed the music for two romantic songs with lyrics by Édith Piaf which were performed by Yves Montand : "La Vie en Rose" for Louiguy in 1946 and "Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai" for Henri Betti in 1947. These two songs have been adapted into English in 1950 : "La Vie en Rose" by Mack David with the same title and "Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai" by Harold Rome with the title "What Can I Do".
