Biography

Archie Stout was born on March 30, 1886 in Renwick, Iowa, USA. He was a cinematographer, known for The Quiet Man (1952), Fort Apache (1948) and The Arm of the Law (1932). He was married to Evelyn. He died on March 10, 1973 in Los Angeles, California, USA.

American cinematographer, formerly a forest ranger. In Hollywood from 1914, he had a reputation as an adept outdoor cameraman, employed particularly on second-feature westerns, often for Republic or such Poverty Row outfits as Paul Malvern's Lone Star. Having labored under shoestring budgets for most of his career, Stout finally hit the big time as director of photography on John Wayne's A-grade feature The High and the Mighty (1954). The pressure might have been too much for him, as he suffered a heart attack the following year and was forced to retire.

He is the only cinematographer to be nominated and win an Academy Award for second unit photography, for John Ford's The Quiet Man (1952).
