  • He wore a ring on his right hand that was a gift to him from his maternal grandfather, John Louis "Poppa" Duvall, whom he adored. It was a ring that had been in his family for years and belonged to his great-grandfather.
  • Lived at the Fontenoy Tower apartments in Hollywood during his early career in the late 80s to early 90s. His neighbors were Johnny Depp and Crispin Glover.
  • John was the son of Jim C. Dye, a furniture manufacturer, and Lynn Maree (Duvall), a homemaker. They raised him and his two younger brothers, Jamey and Jerre, as devout Methodists.
