Ruby Yang(I)

Ruby Yang is an Academy Award winning filmmaker whose documentaries bring overlooked stories from China and across Asia into focus, AIDS-affected children, LGBT communities, youth, grassroots activism, and nomadic cultures. She won the Oscar for Documentary Short Subject for The Blood of Yingzhou District (2006), and is also known for The Warriors of Qiugang (2010), an Oscar nominee, My Voice, My Life (2014) and Ritoma (2018). With Thomas Lennon, she mounted a multi-year AIDS prevention campaign seen over 900 million times on Chinese television. From 2016 to 2019 she led the Hong Kong Documentary Initiative at The University of Hong Kong, mentoring emerging filmmakers, and in 2019 she was named Artist of the Year (Film) by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. In 2025, she was appointed director of HKU's School of Future Media.

Her latest project, The Vanishing Song, about a gibbon trapped in urban Kuala Lumpur, is due for release in October 2026.
