Giorgos Arvanitis(I)

Giorgos Arvanitis is a Greek cinematographer and editor whose work has had a major influence on both Greek and European cinema. He learned the trade through practical experience rather than formal film studies, beginning his career after training as an electrician and working his way up from camera assistant to director of photography. He first gained extensive industry experience at Finos Film, photographing numerous popular productions including The Blue Beads from Greece (1967), I oraia tou kourea (1969), The Teacher with the Blonde Hair (1969), and I neraida kai to palikari (1969). In 1968 he began a landmark collaboration with director Theodoros Angelopoulos on the short film I ekpombi (1968), a partnership that continued for decades through celebrated works such as The Travelling Players (1975), The Beekeeper (1986), Landscape in the Mist (1988), Ulysses' Gaze (1995), and the Palme d'Or-winning Eternity and a Day (1998). Over a career spanning more than one hundred films, Arvanitis has also worked with distinguished filmmakers including Michael Cacoyannis, Jules Dassin, Pantelis Voulgaris, Dinos Katsouridis, Costa-Gavras, Volker Schlöndorff, Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne, Marco Bellocchio, Agnieszka Holland, Amos Gitai, and Catherine Breillat. After relocating to France in 1989, he continued an internationally acclaimed career, earning honors such as the Golden Osella for Best Cinematography at the Venice Film Festival for Australia (1989) and multiple awards from the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. Widely regarded as one of the leading cinematographers of his generation, he has been recognized for his visual contribution to both Greek and international filmmaking and has remained active through professional organizations and film institutions in France.
