- Mary Stuart Masterson started acting before the age of ten, when she appeared in The Stepford Wives (1975) in 1975 with her father. Afterwards, at the direction of her parents, Mary Stuart led a life outside of the limelight, attending school in New York. She appeared in a few productions at New York's Dalton School. At the age of 15, the young actress appeared on Broadway in Eva Le Gallienne's version of Alice In Wonderland. She played two parts, the Four of Hearts and the Small White Rabbit. She returned to films in 1985 with the role of Dani in Heaven Help Us (1985). For eight months afterwards, Mary Stuart attended New York University, where she studied anthropology.

As a child, Mary Stuart studied dance and choreography and spent summers on Galveston Bay racing sailboats. In high school, Mary Stuart starred in Heaven Help Us which filmed during her senior year at Dalton School. Though she was planning to attend Oberlin College to study creative writing, she decided to attend NYU to remain in NYC to make herself available to opportunities to audition. After several years on the road, in 1990-1991 Mary Stuart attended Goddard College.
Mary Stuart Masterson's film, TV and theater career, includes roles in At Close Range, Some Kind of Wonderful, Immediate Family [National Board of Review Award] Fried Green Tomatoes, Benny and Joon, and the Broadway musical, Nine [Tony Award nomination]. In 2006, Mary Stuart made her directorial debut with The Cake Eaters, starring Kristen Stewart, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2007 and was released in 2009. It was awarded audience and jury prizes at numerous film festivals.
She married twice before she met her husband, Jeremy Davidson. The couple have 4 children, and live in New York’s Hudson Valley. In 2016 Mary Stuart founded Stockade Works, a film crew training and mentorship non-profit for Hudson Valley locals. With her husband, she co-founded Storyhorse Documentary Theater which was conceived as a way for the couple to plant deeper roods in their adopted community through hearing the stories of the incredible people who live there. The project produces full length theater pieces from transcribed interviews and historical documents performed as readings by professional actors in front of large scale video projection.

- I learn a lot from acting, but it's not my natural way. I can't help but write; I do it all the time. It's a condition of being for me. I think I am a writer, but professionally I feel drawn to and suited for directing. As far as producing, I like to facilitate other people's good work. With acting I like to be in ensemble pieces.
- [on how she got the role of Watts in "Some Kind of Wonderful"] I had just finished filming "At Close Range" and had dark red hair. I didn't have it professionally dyed from a dark color to a light color, so (when I did it) it almost all broke off. But when I auditioned, Howie( Howard Deutch) was like, "That's perfect!" (Laughs) Hence the blond and the shortness.
