Krige originated the role of the Borg Queen in the film Star Trek: First Contact (1996), but chose not to reprise her portrayal on Star Trek: Voyager (1995). Actress Susanna Thompson played the Borg Queen four times on Voyager, but she was unavailable during the filming of the series' final episode (she was not confident into her shooting schedule for Once and Again (1999)), so Krige resumed the role for the finale.

Attended Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree and her Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in drama (1975). She later received an honorary degree (Doctor of Letters) from the university in April 2004. Attended the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (CSSD) in London, England.

She was awarded the 1982 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award (1981 season) for Most Promising Newcomer in the production of George Bernard Shaw's "Arms and the Man" at the Lyric Theatre (London).

Krige was John Harrison's first choice to play Lady Jessica in the miniseries Dune (2000), but was unavailable on account of scheduling conflicts. However, actress Saskia Reeves was unavailable for the miniseries Children of Dune (2003) (she had to withdraw from the miniseries on account of her pregnancy), so Krige was reoffered the role.

Along with James Cromwell, Jeremy Roberts, Boris Lee Krutonog and Jack Shearer, she is one of only five actors to initially play a character in a "Star Trek" film before reprising their role in a "Star Trek" television series. She played the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact (1996) and later reprised her role in Endgame (2001).

To prepare for the role of the cult leader Christabella in the horror film Silent Hill (2006), Krige read "The End of Days" by Erna Paris, a book about tyranny during the Spanish Inquisition. However, Krige did not particularly enjoy the role, feeling that her character was too manipulative and evil.

Has worked with Malcolm McDowell in the horror film She Will (2021). Both stars appeared in the very popular Star Trek series. McDowell appeared in Star Trek: Generations (1994) and Krige appeared in Star Trek: First Contact (1996).

Even though they are mother and son in Stephen King's Sleepwalkers (1992), Krige is less than 15 years older than her co-star Brian Krause, who plays her son in the horror film. Director Mick Garris cast her as Mary Brady after remembering her appearance in Ghost Story (1981), which he publicized for Universal Pictures.

Krige replaced Helen Hunt for the role of Tully Sorenson and was beaten by Faye Dunaway in the final fight of the black comedy Barfly (1987). Director Barbet Schroeder believed that the role needed an actress with more experience to play opposite Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway.

Discovered by Elmo de Witt, for whom she made her movie debut in Vergeet My Nie (1976).
